'Beautiful' Haverhill Children Survive Fatal Crash, Community Sends Much-Needed Aid

A nine-month-old child was left wearing a full body and neck brace 24 hours a day because of a single-car crash that sent his sister flying 50 feet from the vehicle, critically injured his mother, and led to the death of the car's driver.

The children's father, Joshua Burney of Haverhill, created a GoFundMe to raise funds for hospital bills and days out of work and was met with a flood of support. The fundraiser has garnered over $7,000 in only three days.

Burney's children, Lively and Lorenzo, and their mother were injured in the accident that occurred in East Kingston, New Hampshire on Tuesday, March 28, according to the GoFundMe and New Hampshire State Police.

The car was driven by Paul DiChiara, a Melrose native who loved working on cars and playing video games in his spare time, as reported by Daily Voice.

The children's mother was air-lifted to a Boston hospital after the car she, DiChiara, and her children were traveling in crashed into a tree at high speeds.

Lively, a three-year-old girl, "miraculously only" sustained two fractured elbows, a fractured shoulder, and abrasions across her face and body. She was flown from the scene of the crash to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

Lorenzo, the nine-month-old son, suffered a fractured skull, multiple compound fractures in his neck and spine, and painful abrasions around his neck.

"He is required to wear a full body and neck brace 24 hours a day for the foreseeable future," Burney wrote in the GoFundMe campaign description.

Burney explained on the fundraiser's site that he is the sole provider of Lively and Lorenzo and that he will be out of work for at least three months to care for his children.

"Their injuries require an extensive amount of time in the hospital, follow-up appointments with multiple providers, and different tools to help facilitate their recovery," he wrote. "I will end up using all of my sick and personal time."
